Our curriculum is carefully designed, planned and implemented to provide breadth for all children:
At Barnwell Academy understanding our pupil’s backgrounds, life experiences and culture has supported us in developing a curriculum with three key priorities underpinning each subject area. We believe that by focusing on the key priorities our children will develop into successful learners, achieve their full potential and be ready to continue their lifelong learning journey.
Our curriculum priorities are:
- Aspirations- we aim to provide experiences in which pupils develop a strong desire to achieve and understand the possibilities for their future.
- Inclusion- we aim to offer experiences in which all children become independent and successful learners.
- Environment-we aim to provide experiences which help our pupils in value the environment and understand their responsibilities towards sustaining their local and global environment.
Our full and rich designed curriculum encompasses our school values: respect, responsibility, compassion, positivity, perseverance and teamwork. The experiences we offer champions our school ethos and ensures that our children benefit from a range of academic, spiritual, moral, social and cultural activities. Our curriculum gives our children the knowledge, skills and belief that they can learn successfully and achieve their goals and dreams.

Our curriculum is carefully designed, planned and implemented to provide balance for every child:
At Barnwell Academy it is our underlying belief that all children should experience success at school both academically and personally.
We have designed, organised and planned our curriculum to ensure every child receives an appropriate mix of academic and personal development which means in practice our curriculum secures knowledge and skills in reading, writing and maths but also places importance on the foundation subjects.
The high expectations ensure our balanced approach still secures high standards in core subjects. Enabling children to reach or exceed national standards is of importance to enable children to succeed at the next stage of their education and achieve in society.
At Barnwell Academy we place high priority on ensuring children’s wellbeing is met. We understand to be a successful learner children need resilience, persistence and optimism and children need to be emotionally secure. We, therefore, design our curriculum which values and supports not only academic development but also children’s physical and mental wellbeing.
We carefully monitor children’s progress and our well planned and thoughtful approach to SMSC helps to ensure that every child is well cared for and supported.
Our full and rich curriculum, with its excellent range of opportunities and experiences and our firm commitment to an extended curriculum ensures that every child can achieve success.
Our curriculum is carefully designed, planned and implemented for depth of learning:
At Barnwell Academy we design and deliver our curriculum to ensure children not only cover the content of the curriculum but achieve depth to their learning which enables them to apply their knowledge, skills and understanding in all areas of the curriculum.
We achieve depth of learning through planning a wide range of opportunities that ensures children are fluent in basic skills. Opportunities to revisit previous learning and apply their basic reading, writing and mathematical skills in other subjects ensures children gradually develop a deeper understanding of the skills and processes in each subject, at their own pace and for some children personalised. Our curriculum encourages higher order deep level of understanding rather than just acquiring new facts and knowledge.
