Barnwell Academy

Academy Finance & Governance

What is an Academy?

Academies are independent, state-funded schools, which receive their funding directly from central government, rather than through a local authority.

The day-to-day running of the school is with the head teacher, but they are overseen by individual charitable bodies called academy trusts.

At Barnwell Academy, we are part of Barnwell Academy Trust which has a board consisting of five members.  These members determine the ethos and purpose of the Trust and the way it will be governed - this is set out in the Articles of Association.

Our current risk register can be read here.

Academy Finance

The Education Skills and Funding Agency (ESFA) funds academies on the same basis as maintained schools.

The General Annual Grant (GAG) is the name for an academy’s main revenue funding.

Barnwell Academy's GAG statement for 2023-2024 can be found here.

More information on the schools financial benchmarking service can be found here.

Previous year GAG statements and accounts

As an Academy Trust we have to report our financial year activity on an annual basis.

This activity is detailed in an audited accounts report that is externally audited by independent accountants and then submitted to the Department of Education and Companies House.
