Barnwell Academy

Our Science Curriculum

At Barnwell Academy, we aim to deliver a high-quality science education to provide the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. We believe scientific knowledge and skills to be key to the children and wider world future prosperity, and that all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes of science.

Science is taught discreetly once per week throughout the year and is delivered through coherently planned lessons that follow a logical progression in order to develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding. Each half term focuses on a specific topic running parallel with a specific scientific skill focus. This encompasses all aspects outlined in the national curriculum whilst also providing additional topics to allow knowledge to be enhanced through cross curricular links with geography and DT focusing on scientific implications and uses. This approach also allows consolidation of knowledge as topics are more readily revisited.

It is our belief that the impact of this approach allows children to independently explain a range of natural phenomenon, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes whilst develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about science that children take with them throughout life.
